Beautiful white mushrooms growing on the western side of the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. I took this picture the last weekend of September on the Pinnacle Lake Trail. Likely Pleurotellus porrigens, commonly called Angel Wings.

Staghorn Fern

Staghorn fern is an epiphyte that grows in tropical areas on trees, cliffs, or tall rocks. It has two types of leaves, or fronds, that help the plant to thrive in high up places.

The first photo shows the branched fronds which do the majority of the plant’s photosynthesis. The second image I took during my university greenhouse trip. I was able to get up close, behind the branched fronds, and find the circular fronds. These leaves have the special task of collecting water, debris, and insects. After awhile, the collection is converted into the plant’s own nutritive soil. Since the fern collects its own water and nutrients, it has no need to parasitize or harm its host tree. -sv

UN World Water Day Campaign -

There are many great tools provided by UN’s Water Campaign available to educate kids and adults about water conversation. I was surprised to see that there are 140 liters of water used to produce 1 cup of coffee. Makes me think - I drink gobs of coffee! I know there are three major ways to process coffee: washed, natural and semi-washed. I’m glad where I source my coffee (using washed method primarily), water reclamation is taken very seriously to maintain the sustainability of the coffee farm’s surrounding environment and communities. -sv
